Asanas are designed to regulate the life force in the body in order to balance and strengthen it. The by-product of the practice of yoga is health and well-being. This leads to its therapeutic dimension. Yoga can serve as a therapeutic treatment in many situations. It preserves and enhances the sensitivity of the body and may increase its response to conventional medical treatment.

A student with a physical, physiological, or psychological condition may not be able to perform certain classical Asanas and Pranayamas. Yoga therapy is based on using the classical yoga poses in a modified fashion—sometimes with props—to achieve the appropriate benefit. As the practice progresses, the student reduces the level of modification and may advance from a remedial/recovering practice to a strengthening practice.
